This is a manual labor position with a prescribed training and introductory period to become proficient in the listed skills, duties, and requirements. Day in the Life – Watco Conductor: Essential Duties And Responsibilities Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance. Follow written and verbal directions to complete tasks on schedule. Read, write, and communicate in English; understand basic math. Learn from directions, observations, and mistakes and apply procedures with good judgment. Read switching orders from designated person. Supervise and coordinate the activities of train crews. Receive and implement switching instructions from Manager or Customer; direct car movements accordingly. Notify engineer of switching orders and communicate with crew via radio or signals. Work with crew and yard workers to exchange information as needed. Coordinate with the train dispatcher via radio for stops, delays, or oncoming trains. Throw track switches, couple and uncouple cars, and assist with switching operations as needed. Maintain records of cars switched (number, origin, destination, cargo). May coordinate switching crew activities from locomotive cab, caboose, or control tower. Raise coupling levers and manage train assembly as required. Set and follow safety signals, warnings, and emergency procedures; observe track conditions. Identify equipment needing repairs and communicate with maintenance as needed. Perform other duties as requested or required. Machines, Tools, Special Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment Used Hammers, ratchets, chisels, pry bars, wrenches, brushes; PPE including hard hat, vest, safety glasses, FR clothing, gloves, steel-toed boots. Education And Experience High school education or GED required. Ability to pass training and required testing. Work Environment The work environment includes exposure to outside weather conditions, noise, and fumes from gas, oil, and grease.
