Overview The Environmental Health Safety Officer I job is responsible for conducting safety observations and audits of facilities, equipment and work in progress to ensure compliance with safety standards. Under direct supervision of Program Supervisor, Risk Management this role will support Fairfax Water’s safety programs by conducting safety inspections and audits, providing employees with safety training applicable to their work processes, and investigating accidents to determine the root cause, circumstances and contributing factors. Responsibilities Performs regular safety inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and work practices. Identifies potential hazards and recommend corrective actions. Develops and delivers safety training for employees. Assists in managing compliance with regulatory requirements in a diverse number of environments, to include equipment and facility maintenance shops, administrative offices, treatment plants, construction sites and field-based activities. Investigates accidents, incidents, and near-misses; prepare detailed reports and recommend preventive measures. Maintains and updates safety records, including OSHA logs and incident reports. Monitors organizational compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and DOT regulations and advises staff on process improvement. Supports the organization’s departments in taking a proactive approach to ensure compliance. Coordinates emergency response planning and evacuation drills. Contributes to the development and implementation of safety procedures. Monitors and reports on safety performance metrics. Enhances and supports safety culture initiatives. Collaborates with management and employees to promote a culture of safety. Serves as a liaison between field personnel and management. Serves on the Fairfax Water safety committee. Compiles accident and/or injury reports. Conducts job hazard analysis to mitigate risks. Conducts DMV review of employee driving records. Compiles, maintains, evaluates, researches and analyzes safety management data to measure and recommend improvement of safety programs, processes and policies. Makes recommendations to management to reduce safety exposure based on statistical analysis, accident investigations, audits and inspections. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in safety sciences, industrial hygiene, safety management, or closely related field and 3-years related experience. Experience with Microsoft 365 and database management. Professional knowledge of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, Department of Transportation (DOT), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes. Professional knowledge of hazard assessments, job hazard analysis, and personal protective equipment. Professional knowledge of industrial, construction, and office operations; and occupational safety and health programs. Outstanding oral and written communications skills. Able to frequently travel within Fairfax Water service territory and respond to after-hours events where necessary. Ability to work effectively and maintain strong working relationship with managers, supervisors, and employees. Experience providing onsite safety and occupational health support. Possession of a valid driver’s license and good driving record Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment. Physical Requirements Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
