Responsibilities The Requirements Development and Planning Services (RDPS) group is part of PPD and supports requirements definition for project planning of high rigor and line item projects. We are looking to hire a Principal Architectural Engineer (Modeler). RDPS develops and documents the functional and operational requirements for the project. This includes identifying project and/or infrastructure needs, developing solutions and options, ensuring compliance, collaborating with technical and management stakeholders, and leveraging technology and innovation. RD&PS also provides numerous a la carte services to projects including: pre-conceptual and conceptual sketches and design, program/project system breakdown, high level project timeline and schedule development, site plans/layouts, floor plans, diagrammatic plans, perspective views (3-D), full rendered views (3-D), and other custom sketches, models, and/or renderings for project plans, reports, and presentations. Key Responsibilities Devise solutions to complex technical problems of broad scope that may requires resolving conflicting customer expectations and design requirements, utilizing unconventional technology and materials, and/or cross-disciplinary integration. Contribute to strategies and reports. Serve as an internal subject matter expert (SME) in their discipline. Develop technical documentation based on general direction and technical guidance on complex issues and projects of a broad scope. Perform design and technical activities that require interpretation and correlation of codes and standards, complex computer software, and unique processes and procedures tailored for the work being executed. Contribute to development of engineering solutions employing new principles, concepts, and/or techniques. Serve as lead on teams requiring coordination with other teams. Coordinate work with other project team members. Execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures. Accept individual accountability for products and deliverables. Development of Functional Requirements Documents (FRDs), Functional and Operational Requirements Documents (FORDs), and Technical Requirements Documents (TRDs) for infrastructure (civil, electrical, mining, utility) projects. Development of pre-design/conceptual sketches, program / Project system breakdown, high-level initial project timelines and schedules, site plans/layouts and floor plans (with focused sections), diagrammatic plans (2-D). Legend views (2-D), perspective views (3-D), full rendered view (with motion/fly over) (3-D), and custom sketches, models, or renderings. Interface with project managers, customers, and stakeholders in the development of technical and operational requirements. Perform options and solutions analysis. Support project viability, discovery, and planning efforts of project managers in relation to the above. Support PPD management special assignments as requested. Interpret and adapt guidelines for specific cases. Evaluate processes, procedures to improve performance. Serve as a consultant to less experienced engineers and train other engineers. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) Or Professional Engineer license Plus at least 9 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized. Knowledge of how codes and standards from other disciplines affect their discipline. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Proficient in use of Revit, AutoCad software. Ability to learn new software systems. Ability to mentor and train others on organizations processes, documents, and applications. Knowledgeable about NNSA and national laboratory work environments. Able to exercise considerable discretion and judgment in performing work and conducting evaluations of operation/process effectiveness. Able to utilize initiative and possess ability to apply knowledge and experience to resolve problems and compose technical correspondence and reports. Able to prioritize and schedule multiple activities in the most efficient manner and meet required deadlines. Able to communicate with all types of people in a tactful, professional, and effective manner while screening and maintaining confidentiality. Able to remember extensive policies, procedures, terminology, schedules, personnel, and other details. Ability to deal with pressure of handling multiple tasks, complaints, frequent interruptions, and time constraints. The primary work location will be at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada, with travel to the Nevada National Security Site, Mercury, Nevada (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada). Work schedule for this position will be 4/10's, Monday - Thursday (subject to change). Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Must possess a valid driver’s license. MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required.
